Red Oak Deacons Bench

Featured on the cover and lead furniture project of Canadian Woodworking, April/May 2004

This red oak Deacon's Bench was commissioned to provide both convenient entry-way seating and storage for winter boots and clothing. The bench is built as a hinged lid box made of traditional raised panel frames.  Each frame is assembled with one or more panels, each of which consist of rails, stiles and muntins using tongue-and groove and blind mortise and tenons joinery. The panel joinery completely traps matched rotary cut veneer core oak panels for clean and uncluttered lines. The arched slatted back extends upwards from the rear legs to provide back support while arm rests join the extended front legs, widened with corbels, to the back legs.  
A solid veneer core oak panel base is trapped in a continuous groove that runs around the lower rails of the box.  The inside of the box is lined on five sides with aromatic Western red cedar.  A full width hinged lid of jointed solid red oak allows access to the 6.5 cubic feet of storage space. Transitional shop-made oak moulding caps the top of the frames and provides peripheral support to the lid of the bench when used as a seat. Arches are cut into the upper back rail and the face and side lower rails to lighten the look of the design. As a hallmark of WoodsGood customized furniture, there are no screws, nails or other fasteners used in the joinery - snug fitting glued joinery provides both the strength and uninterrupted lines of quality hand-built furniture.
The Deacon's Bench measures 46" L x 25" W x 41" H and is finished in three coats of Danish oil and a final application of paste wax.

Single Seat Cherry Piano Bench

An elegant solid cherry piano bench inspired by musical notation. Tapered legs rise to support the body and curve away like a crotchet or quaver. Each arm rest is shaped like a "clé de sol".
The bench lid opens to reveal a spacious 17" x 11" x 4" deep enclosure for storage of sheet music, song books or even small musical instruments.
Pinned mortise & tenon, dado & groove and dowel joinery provide the frame both strength and uninterrupted lines.
The piece is finished in high-lustre Danish oil with a protective bees wax finish. Outside dimensions are 24"(H) x 28"(L) x 12"(W) while the seat is at a comfortable 20".

Dual Seat Cherry Piano Bench

Featured as lead furniture project of Canadian Home Workshop, November 2003

An elegant solid cherry piano bench inspired by musical notation. Tapered legs rise to support the body and curve away like a crotchet or quaver. Each arm rest is shaped like a "clé de sol".  The bench lid is inlaid with six strips of bloodwood  representing a musical score.
The bench lid opens to reveal a spacious 28" x 11" x 4 1/2" deep enclosure for storage of sheet music, song books or even small musical instruments.
Pinned mortise & tenon, dado & groove and dowel joinery provide the frame both strength and uninterrupted lines.
The piece is finished in high-lustre Danish oil with a protective bees wax finish.  Outside dimensions are 24"(H) x 36"(L) x 13"(W) while the seat is at a comfortable 20".
