Paduak and Birdseye Maple Cigar Humidor

This piece was commissioned as a Christmas gift. The humidor has a capacity for ~ 80 cigars and stores them in a humidity controlled environment. A small drawer is included to store cigar accouterments such as clippers and lighters and a similarly sized secret box allows you to keep your extra special "stogies" from prying eyes. The humidor is constructed as a paduak frame enclosing solid birdseye maple panels. The main cavity of the box and secret drawer is lined and lidded with Spanish cedar and includes one or more moveable dividers. A hygrometer is installed through the upper front panel, the back of which opens into the main cavity. A humidifier pad maintains the humidity at the correct level of 70% rh.

The drawer and secret box are made from birdseye maple with a felt lined base of maple veneer ply. They engage on paduak runners to ensure they run smoothly without binding. The lid is made in a similar manner to the frame with a large single birdseye maple panel. It is hinged and closes tightly with three sets of rare-earth magnets.

The humidor measures 17" L x 8" H x 10" D and is finished in several coats of Danish oil and satin liquid wax.

Maple Hope Chest

This piece was commissioned as a Christmas gift for an 18 year old as an elegant cedar lined maple hope chest for the storage of linens, blankets, clothing and keep-sakes. After an extensive search of hope chest styles, we settled on a look of simple lines in a natural light colouring that would emphasize the maple wood's different grain patterns. The design of the deep chest shows off the beautiful different light colours and grain patterns of maple. Gentle curves of the base contrast with the sharp lines of the panels. The transitional moulding sports a deep cove that blends into the lid's gentle round-over.
The chest is made from a solid maple frame with a thin contrasting bloodwood highlight, and a hinged solid maple top. The front, back, side and base panels are made from rotary cut maple veneer panels. The construction uses mortise & tenon and groove joinery throughout. Cedar tongue & groove planking lines the inside and base of the box providing a smart finished interior that also acts as a natural insect-repellant to protect the contents.
The chest measures 44" L x 20" W x 22"H and is finished with Danish oil and several coats of bees wax.
